Chennai: Streaming giant Prime Video has reportedly withdrawn from its commitment to stream Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan following prolonged delays in its theatrical release, industry sources say.

The Tamil star’s final film, produced by KVN Productions, had its digital rights reportedly sold to Prime Video for ₹121 crore, with the platform expecting the film to be available for streaming in early February. However, the film continues to face uncertainty due to censorship clearance issues.

Censorship delays add to uncertainty

According to reports, the Film Certification Board’s revising committee postponed its review after a committee member fell ill, causing further delays in approving the film for release. The producer has reportedly confirmed that these delays were a key factor in Prime Video’s decision to relinquish the streaming rights.

Theatrical release also uncertain

The film’s theatrical release, initially speculated for April 30 by a Canadian distributor, may now be postponed further, with some rumours suggesting a release as late as June. Observers attribute the potential delay partly to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which Vijay is actively campaigning for his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and seeking the post of Chief Minister.

High budget adds to stakes

Jana Nayagan is one of the most expensive Tamil films to date, reportedly costing over ₹400 crore to produce. Industry analysts say Prime Video’s withdrawal could create financial pressure on KVN Productions, though fans argue that the streaming platform stands to lose more, given the anticipation around Vijay’s final film.

The production team has yet to officially comment on the future of the film’s streaming or theatrical release schedule.
