While his mother was a constant source of support, his relationship with his father, filmmaker Tahir Hussain, was strained by a strict upbringing and later, financial disputes

Aamir Khan recently opened up about his emotionally layered relationship with his parents, sharing rare personal memories that shaped his life, both on and off-screen.
In an interview on Zee Music, the actor spoke candidly about his strict upbringing, financial struggles, and eventual reconciliation with his father, filmmaker Tahir Hussain.
Aamir also spoke about how these early life experiences influenced his personality, career choices, and family dynamics over the years.
Speaking fondly of his mother, Zeenat Hussain, Aamir described her as a constant pillar of support and gentleness. “I have never heard my mother raise her voice,” he said, recalling their childhood.
“Me and Faisal (his brother) would have a lot of fun as kids, so she would just say, ‘Aamir, aap aisa karenge?’ (Aamir, you did this?) This was the maximum that she would scold us."
Physical punishment and embarrassment at school
In contrast, Aamir recalled a far more difficult relationship with his father.
“My father and my mother had very different personalities,” he said, noting that their father’s discipline often came through physical punishment.
“Faisal and I would get prints of his hand on our faces. We would get slapped with the back of his hand; he used to wear a ring, and that ring would leave a mark on our face. So the next day, when we would go to school, it would be very embarrassing,” Aamir shared.
Distance and tension during family disputes
Aamir admitted that he never shared a close relationship with his father, and the distance between them grew over time. Their bond became more strained during a legal custody dispute in 2007 involving his brother Faisal, along with disagreements over finances. These tensions led Aamir to distance himself from his father.
A reconciliation before his father’s death
Despite the years of conflict, the two made peace before Tahir Hussain passed away from a heart attack on 2 February 2010. Aamir, who was abroad at the time, returned to Mumbai immediately. Since then, he has spoken warmly about his father’s influence on his life and career.
‘Sitaare Zameen Par’: Aamir’s return to the big screen
On the professional front, Aamir Khan is returning to cinema with ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, a spiritual sequel to his acclaimed 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par.’
The film features Genelia Deshmukh opposite Aamir and is a remake of the Spanish film ‘Campeones.’
It will also introduce several newcomers to Hindi cinema, including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, and Samvit Desai.
