In a recent WSJ. Magazine interview, model and entrepreneur Hailey Bieber addressed ongoing speculation comparing her skincare brand, Rhode, with Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty line. After a publicist intervened during a question about brand comparisons, Hailey later described being constantly pitted against others as “annoying,” stating, “It's always annoying being pitted against other people. I didn't ask for that.”

Selena Gomez responds on Instagram

Selena Gomez reacted to Hailey’s remarks with a since-deleted Instagram Story. Over a plain background, Gomez wrote, “Just leave the girl alone,” and added, “She can say whatever she wants. Doesn't affect my life whatsoever. It's just about relevance not intelligence. Be kind. All brands inspire me. There is room for everyone.” Gomez concluded her post with a call for peace: “And hopefully we can all stop.”

Hailey’s interview coincided with the launch of Rhode at Sephora, which also stocks Gomez’s Rare Beauty products. During the discussion, Hailey remarked, “When people want to see you a certain way and they've made up a story about you in their minds, it's not up to you to change that.”

Background of alleged feud

Speculation about tensions between Gomez and Bieber largely stems from Gomez’s past relationship with Bieber, who is now Hailey’s husband. Both celebrities have made public attempts to dispel rumours, including posing together at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ annual gala in 2022.

Hailey has repeatedly condemned fan theories framing a feud between her and Gomez. In a 2023 Bloomberg appearance, she called such narratives “vile and disgusting” and potentially dangerous. She emphasised, “This is not about this pitting between two women—it’s about the vile, disgusting hatred that can come from completely made-up and twisted narratives.”

Both Gomez and Bieber appear committed to keeping their professional and personal lives separate from public speculation, focusing on their respective beauty brands while urging fans and media to avoid perpetuating harmful narratives.
