The ‘rivalry’ between the Pongal releases Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi has escalated to a new level, as tensions rise between the fan bases of their lead stars, Vijay and Sivakarthikeyan. While the two actors are known to share a cordial personal relationship, clashes between their supporters have grown increasingly intense. The protests stem largely from the two films — Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi — arriving in cinemas at the same time this Pongal.

The situation took a controversial turn during the trailer launch of Jana Nayagan at RITZY Cinemas in Madurai. Posters of Parasakthi displayed outside the theatre were allegedly torn down and thrown away by groups of Vijay fans. Others present were seen cheering the act, while videos of the incident were recorded and widely circulated on social media.

Further disturbances were reported at the pre-release event of Parasakthi, where Vijay supporters allegedly caused disruptions. Even before the programme began, some fans occupied seats on the stage and loudly raised slogans in the name of Vijay’s political party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Each time Vijay’s name was mentioned during Sivakarthikeyan’s speech, sections of the audience reportedly erupted in loud cheers, interrupting the proceedings.

Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, was initially slated for a Diwali 2025 release, while Sudha Kongara’s Parasakthi was scheduled for January 14. However, following changes to both release plans, the films are now set to hit screens on January 9 and 10 respectively. Sivakarthikeyan has stated that Parasakthi’s release date was finalised with Vijay’s consent, adding that he had made efforts to avoid a clash.
