Veteran actor Mohanlal made his directorial debut on Wednesday with the release of the much-anticipated movie Barroz.
In an interview hosted by actress Suhasini Maniratnam for Galatta Tamil, Mohanlal reflected on the early years of his son Pranav’s life and career.
“When I was in sixth grade, I was the best actor in school. Pranav was the same. He won the best actor award in his sixth grade... He doesn’t want to do too many films; he prefers to travel and take movies in between. We have no problem with that. Let him enjoy his life. I’ve also told him, just like my father told me, after completing his degree, do whatever you want. Why should we control them?” he said.
Mohanlal also shared his thoughts on his career choices. He revealed that he had once considered stepping away from films to travel the world—a dream that he feels Pranav is now fulfilling. “At hi sage I had thoughts of leaving films and travelling around the world, but I am happy that Pranav is fulfilling that dream of mine,” he said with a smile.
During the interview, Suhasini recalled an amusing memory of Mani Ratnam visiting Mammootty’s house to narrate a story, only to witness Mammootty scolding a young Pranav with a stick. Mohanlal couldn’t help but laugh at the memory, adding, “We share a very good bond. Pranav and Dulquer grew up together until a certain age.” He spoke warmly of Dulquer, emphasizing the close relationship their families share.
Suhasini also asked about Prithviraj Sukumaran, to which Mohanlal spoke about his long-standing connection with him. “I’ve known Prithviraj since he was very young. I’ve worked with his father, Sukumaran, on many films. Mallika (Prithviraj’s mother) is like my sister. I used to play with her when I was young.”
Mohanlal praised Prithviraj not only for his acting talent but also for his remarkable skills as a director. “He is a wonderful director. He knows everything about cinema, how to use an actor, how to use the lens, how to use people. We have done three films together - Lucifer, Bro Daddy, and the upcoming Lucifer sequel,” he shared. “Many people have a special ability to make good choices and have answers to every question as a director, but he has a special ability,” he continued, adding, “He is a good actor, but as a director, he will make history.”
