Jean Paul Lal is currently basking in success, with accolades flowing in for his stellar performance as a cop in Chidambaram’s Balan. While shining as an actor, Jean Paul Lal has equally impressed audiences with his prowess as a director, delivering hits including the 2019 film Driving Licence, starring Prithviraj and Suraj Venjaramoodu.

The film also received a Hindi remake in 2023 titled Selfiee, directed by Raj Mehta and starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles. Interestingly, what has cinephiles talking now is Jean’s candid revelation in an interview with The Cue Studio, where he discussed how he had initially approached Megastar Mammootty to play the lead in Driving Licence, only to face a polite refusal.

“When I approached him back then, the film didn’t actually work for him. As a matter of fact, Mammootty sir said that while playing the role of a superstar in a cinema-within-a-cinema, people would still view him as ‘Mammootty’ rather than absorbing the character on the big screen” — a thought that eventually led to the star saying no to the project.

“I was disappointed. I was like, how could Mammootty (sir/uncle) just say no like that? But now, I realise very well why he said so. Come on, he has years of experience; he couldn’t have been wrong in his judgment. My father (actor Lal) and Sachy sir had also told me that Mammootty wouldn’t have turned it down without a valid reason,” Jean recalled. The success of Driving Licence indeed became a major turning point in his filmmaking career.

As Jean spoke from the heart, the breakdown of these past events captivated cinephiles—serving as yet another example of how coincidences, sharp judgments, and initial disappointments eventually combine to deliver astounding art forms, surging ahead of all chaos, uncertainties, and challenges.
