Rajinikanth’s mega-hit ‘Jailer,’ which dominated the Indian box office, is gearing up for its Japanese release on February 21, 2025. The film, originally released in August 2023, was a massive success in Kollywood, grossing over ₹600 crore worldwide, with an impressive overseas collection of ₹185 crore.
Directed by Nelson and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, editing by R Nirmal and cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan.
‘Jailer’ features Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer drawn back into action. The film also boasts stellar cameos from Mohanlal and Shivraj Kumar, with supporting roles played by Jackie Shroff, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah, Yogi Babu, and others. Notably, ‘Jailer’ marks the long-awaited reunion of Rajinikanth and Ramya Krishnan after Padayappa.
The film’s Japanese release is expected to be grand, as anticipation among Rajinikanth’s international fanbase continues to grow. With additional screens being set up across Japan, industry experts predict a strong reception, mirroring the film’s success in other international markets.
For the unversed, Rajinikanth has a massive fan following in Japan. When the film released in 1998, it became the highest-grossing Indian film in the country. Up until 2022, Muthu held the position. However, SS Rajamouli's RRR, starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan, surpassed the collection and dethroned Muthu.
Meanwhile, fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel, as director Nelson has officially confirmed ‘Jailer 2.’ The announcement video has already gone viral, further fuelling excitement around Rajinikanth’s action-packed universe.
