The name Jai Kishan Kakubhai Shroff may not ring a bell for cinema lovers, but mention Jackie Shroff and Bollywood fans will immediately recognise the legendary star. Making his Bollywood debut in 1982, he quickly won hearts and earned the title of ‘Jaggu Dada’ among his admirers. Even after 42 years in the industry, Jackie continues to shine with his impeccable performances. His most recent films include Singham Again and Baby John.
Humble beginnings in Mumbai’s slums
Jackie was born into a family with a unique cultural mix—his father was a Gujarati businessman and his mother hailed from Turkey. Despite his father’s affluent background, the family lost their wealth, forcing them to live in a cramped one-room house in Teen Batti, a slum area in Mumbai.
That tiny room held deep emotional significance for Jackie, as he has often reminisced about his childhood struggles. “We had public toilets, just three for all the families in our building. Every morning, I had to stand in a long queue with a mug in my hand, waiting for my turn. If I had to reach school or work early, I had to wake up even earlier just to secure my spot in the queue,” he once recalled. Even after entering the film industry, Jackie continued to stay there for some time before finally moving to a better home.
From ‘Jackie’ to Bollywood’s ‘Jaggu Dada’
It was during his school days that a friend gave him the name Jackie, a name that stuck and eventually became his identity. Growing up in poverty meant education took a back seat—he studied only till Class 10 before dropping out to support his family.
To make ends meet, young Jackie took up odd jobs, including selling peanuts outside theatres. Later, he landed a job as a travel agent, which required him to travel frequently. It was during one such journey, while waiting at a bus stand, that fate intervened—a modelling agency executive spotted him and asked if he was interested in modelling. The very next day, Jackie walked into the agency, did his first photoshoot, and took the first step toward stardom.
He soon joined an acting school, where he met Sunil Anand, son of Bollywood legend Dev Anand. Impressed by Jackie, Sunil introduced him to his father, who offered him a small role in the 1982 film Swami Dada. Though it was just a minor role, it set the stage for greater things. The very next year, Jackie’s big break came with Subhash Ghai’s Hero (1983), a film that changed his life forever.
A versatile star across multiple industries

Jackie didn’t just limit himself to Bollywood. He has acted in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Konkani and Odia. In Malayalam cinema, he was seen in films like Athishayan and Ottu, where he starred alongside Kunchacko Boban.
The story behind ‘Jaggu Dada’
Jackie’s famous nickname ‘Jaggu Dada’ has an emotional backstory. In his slum, his elder brother Hemant was affectionately called ‘Dada’ because he was always at the forefront of helping others. Tragedy struck when Hemant lost his life while trying to save a drowning boy—he dived into the sea to rescue him, but never resurfaced.
In honour of Hemant’s bravery, Jackie’s friends started calling him ‘Jaggu Dada’, a name that stayed with him throughout his life.
From a struggling young boy in the slums of Mumbai to a Bollywood superstar, Jackie Shroff’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Through sheer determination, talent and a bit of destiny, he rose to become one of the most beloved and respected actors in Indian cinema. And even after four decades, ‘Jaggu Dada’ remains as charismatic as ever.
