An AI-generated reimagining of characters from the cult Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu is going viral on social media, sparking fascination and amusement among fans.
The video, shared by a page named ‘Kanavukatha’, portrays the iconic "Madampalli Tharavad” in a haunting new light, showing all major characters from the film lying dead across different sections of the ancestral house. The clip carries a tongue-in-cheek caption that reads: “With gold prices crossing ₹1 lakh, Alli’s wedding got cancelled. This is what happened to Madampalli Tharavad after that!”
Set in a dilapidated, cobweb-covered version of the house on the brink of collapse, the AI-generated visuals recreate nearly all prominent characters from the film. Characters portrayed by Thilakan, Innocent, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi are shown sprawled lifeless in various rooms of the house.
The video ends with a dramatic sequence of the Nagavalli, played by veteran actress Shobana. Viewers have praised the accuracy and originality with which the characters have been recreated using AI.
Released in 1993, Manichitrathazhu is regarded as one of the cult classics of Malayalam cinema. The film is directed by Fazil and penned by Madhu Muttam, with production by Swargachitra Appachan. The film features leading performances by Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Shobana, supported by a strong ensemble cast that includes Thilakan, Nedumudi Venu, Innocent, Vinaya Prasad, K.P.A.C. Lalitha, Sridhar, K.B. Ganesh Kumar and Sudheesh.
The film’s success led to multiple remakes across Indian cinema — in Kannada as Apthamitra (2004), Tamil as Chandramukhi (2005), Bengali as Rajmohol (2005) and Hindi as Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007).
