Ahead of the docu-series release, let’s re-look at five of their best films that earned cult status with time.
Zanjeer (1973)
A film directed by Prakash Mehra, with Salim-Javed writing the screenplay for it, ‘Zanjeer’ starred Amitabh, Jaya Bachchan, Pran, Ajit Khan, and Bindu. An iconic hit deemed a classic today, Amitabh’s acting reportedly inspired Rajinikanth. The film was declared a super hit at the domestic box office and was also an overseas blockbuster film at the Soviet box office.
Yaadon KLi Baarat (1973)
Acclaimed filmmaker Nasir Hussain’s ‘Yaadon Ki Baarat’ was the first quintessential Bollywood Masala film that had it all - action, romance, drama, and music. It starred Dharmendra, Vijay Arora, and Tariq Hussain as brothers Shankar, Vijay, and Ratan, while Zeenat Aman and Neetu Singh played the leading ladies. Ajit was seen as Shakaal, the antagonist. Amir Khan also made his debut as a child actor. It became the second biggest blockbuster film of that year. RD Burman’s music also received praise.
Sholay (1975)
Who would believe that one of India’s most iconic films, didn’t pick up business at the box office for the first two weeks? As shocking as it may be, the viewership for director Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’ picked up from the third week of its release, becoming an overnight sensation, per reports. With time, the film went on to become a cult classic, and also became the longest-running Indian film in the theatres, until ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ broke its record. The movie went on to give some memorable songs as well, including ‘Ye Dosti’ which became a friendship anthem in those days. It featured an ensemble cast comprising Amitabh, Dharmendra, Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya, and Hema Malini.
Don (1978)
Salim-Javed wrote the screenplay for many of Amitabh’s films that eventually made him a superstar. Among those is Chandra Barot’s ‘Don’ which saw Amitabh playing a dual role. Classified as a golden jubilee at the Indian box office, it was later remade by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and developed into a franchise with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Just like the movie, the film’s music also became a blockbuster album.
Deewar (1975)
Starring Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh as brothers Ravi and Vijay, and Nirupama Roy playing their mother, ‘Deewar’ is a film that gave one of Indian cinema’s most iconic dialogues - “Mere paas Maa Hai.” The action-drama tells the story of two brothers who grew up in the slums, and upon growing up, were seen on the opposite sides of the law.
