Zootopia is back, and it’s bigger, bolder, and breaking records! The much-awaited sequel, Zootopia 2, has taken the global box office by storm, raking in a staggering $556 million since its release.

Record-Breaking Global Opening

The Walt Disney Company’s “Zootopia 2” delivered a monumental opening, generating $96 million in North America over the weekend and $156 million across the five-day Thanksgiving frame. Its global earnings reached an astonishing $556 million since its Wednesday release, making it the highest international opening for an animated film and the fourth highest global debut of any film in 2025.

Success in China Drives Numbers

China proved to be the film’s biggest market, contributing nearly half of the global total with $272 million in ticket sales. This makes it the second-best nonlocal opening in China’s history, behind “Avengers: Endgame.” The original “Zootopia,” released as “Crazy Animal City” in China, had previously grossed $236 million, creating strong anticipation for the sequel.

North American Performance

In North America, the sequel ranked as the sixth biggest opening of 2025, with audiences flocking to see Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) return to the comically animated city of Zootopia. Analysts noted that “Zootopia 2” capitalised on the franchise’s decade-long fanbase and delivered exactly what global audiences were seeking.

Competition and Thanksgiving Weekend

The animated sequel shared the spotlight with Universal Pictures’ “Wicked: For Good,” which earned $62.8 million domestically over the weekend and $393 million internationally to date. Together, the two PG-rated sequels helped the Thanksgiving holiday mark an unexpected box office bright spot in what had otherwise been a challenging year for cinemas.

Other Box Office Highlights

Other notable openings included “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” ($7 million), “Predator: Badlands” ($4.8 million), “The Running Man” ($3.7 million), and “Hamnet” ($880,000 from a limited 119-theater release).

Looking Ahead

Industry analysts suggested that the strong performance of “Zootopia 2” and “Wicked: For Good” could boost box office momentum for the final weeks of 2025, ahead of upcoming releases like “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.”

“Zootopia 2” proves that beloved animated franchises can still generate record-setting global revenue, particularly when backed by loyal fanbases and strategic international marketing. Its success in China also signals potential renewed opportunities for Hollywood sequels in the Asian market.
