Los Angeles: Hollywood star Anne Hathaway is gearing up to reprise her role in the third instalment of the beloved coming-of-age comedy franchise, Princess Diaries.

According to Variety, the project is moving quickly, with Adele Lim on board to direct. “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life”, Lim said in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide”.

The film is produced by Debra Martin Chase, who helped launch the franchise featuring Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a relatable teenager who becomes the queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia, alongside Julie Andrews as her elegant grandmother.

Hathaway will also serve as a producer through her company, Somewhere Pictures. Naia Cucukov, Lim’s producing partner at 100 Tigers, will executive produce the film along with Melissa Stack.

Princess Diaries 3 has been in the works since 2022. Last year, Hathaway provided an update on the much-anticipated film during an interview with V Magazine. “We’re in a good place”, Hathaway teased. “There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place”.

Flora Greeson is writing the script, though specific plot details have not yet been revealed. The new film is expected to continue the story from the original Princess Diaries (2001) and its sequel, Royal Engagement (2004), rather than rebooting the series.

Adele Lim is well-known for writing the hit movie ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ which earned USD 174 million domestically on a $30 million budget, becoming one of the most successful romantic comedies ever and receiving multiple nominations, including for best picture at the Golden Globes.
