
New Delhi: Payal Kapadia's critically acclaimed film All We Imagine As Light has lost the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language to the French movie Emilia Perez at the awards ceremony in London on Sunday.
Despite controversy surrounding Emilia Perez's lead actress, Karla Sofia Gascon, whose past tweets were criticised as Islamophobic and racist, the film won the prestigious award. The film's supporting actress, Zoe Saldana, also took home a BAFTA for her role in the film.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, Emilia Perez tells the story of four women in Mexico, each searching for their own happiness. The film follows Emilia (Gascon), a cartel leader who recruits Rita (Saldana), an overlooked lawyer, to help her fake her death in a bid to finally live her life authentically.
All We Imagine As Light
All We Imagine As Light tells the poignant story of two Malayali nurses in Mumbai and their deep bond of friendship. The Malayalam-Hindi film made history by becoming the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
Earlier this year, Emilia Perez also claimed victory at the Golden Globes, winning the Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language category, beating out All We Imagine As Light and other notable films.
Other nominated films in thecategory
Other films nominated for the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language included I'm Still Here (Portuguese), Kneecap (Irish/English), and The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Persian).
Kneecap, a film by director Rich Peppiatt, won the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. The film explores the rise of Kneecap, a hip-hop trio from Belfast.
Other BAFTA winners
At the star-studded ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Conclave, a papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, won both Best Film and Best British Film.
Brady Corbet won Best Director for The Brutalist, while Adrien Brody took home the Best Actor award for his role in the film. Mikey Madison won Best Actress for Anora, and Kieran Culkin was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his performance in A Real Pain.
Scottish actor David Tennant, known for Doctor Who and Good Omens, hosted the BAFTAs for the second time.
