The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday announced the nominees in Los Angeles. While a few Indian films, including 'Aadujeevitham', 'All We Imagine as Light', and 'Kanguwa', were in the running, only one managed to make the cut.
The Netflix short film 'Anuja', produced by Guneet Monga and Priyanka Chopra, and directed by Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mathai, has been nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category.
This year, the French film 'Emilia Perez' is leading the Oscar race with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Its star, Karla Sofia Gascón, has also made history by becoming the first trans actor to be nominated for an Oscar, competing in the Best Actress category.
Following closely behind is the American fantasy film 'Wicked', with 10 nominations. It’s been recognised in major categories like Best Picture and Best Actress, making it another big contender for the night.
Anuja
The Indian short film 'Anuja' has earned a spot in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. The film tells the story of a gifted nine-year-old girl, Anuja, and her sister Palak as they face a life-changing opportunity. The emotional narrative explores their bond and sheds light on the struggles faced by girls worldwide.
In addition to its heartfelt story, 'Anuja' highlights the harsh realities of education inequality. While India has a Right to Education Act, the film shows how many children are still unable to access basic education due to socio-economic challenges.
'Anuja' boasts an impressive lineup of producers, including two-time Oscar winner Guneet Monga ('The Elephant Whisperers' and 'Period. End of Sentence'), Priyanka Chopra, and Mindy Kaling. The film is co-directed by Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mathai.
Priyanka Chopra expressed her pride in being part of the project, stating, "This beautiful film shines a spotlight on a subject that affects millions of children around the world, who are faced with the impossible decision between a future they cannot yet see and the immediate realities of their present."
This marks Guneet Monga’s third Oscar nomination as a producer, further solidifying her reputation in global cinema.
Beyond its gripping storyline, 'Anuja' resonates with audiences by portraying a universal issue. The film’s narrative holds up a mirror to the challenges faced by countless children who must choose between pursuing an education and surviving the harsh realities of their daily lives.
