Thiruvananthapuram: Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan has voiced his disappointment over the lack of public recognition and celebration when he was honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award two decades ago.

Speaking at the government-organised tribute event ‘Malayalam Vaanolam, Laal Salaam’, held to honour actor Mohanlal for receiving the same award, Adoor reflected on the contrast in reception.

“There were no celebrations or expressions of public appreciation like this when I received the award twenty years ago,” Adoor said. “Today, the Honourable Chief Minister and the government have taken a special interest in recognising Mohanlal, and I share in your joy and pride.”

Adoor was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2004 for his lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. He recalled that he chaired the jury that selected Mohanlal for his first National Film Award for acting.

“I've not yet had the opportunity to work with Mohanlal, unfortunately. But I have always deeply respected and admired his talent,” Adoor continued. “It was under my chairmanship that Mohanlal received his first National Award. That’s where his journey of national recognition began, and I take immense pride and happiness in that.”

He also praised Mohanlal’s widespread appeal: “Every Malayali has seen a reflection of themselves in Mohanlal. That’s why, wherever Malayalis live, he has become beloved by all. I wish him continued success and a long, enduring career in cinema.”

In his reply speech, Mohanlal acknowledged Adoor’s remarks with heartfelt gratitude. “The first time Adoor Gopalakrishnan sir spoke about me—no, in fact, he has spoken about me at many gatherings,” Mohanlal began, before pausing. “To him, I express my deepest thanks from the bottom of my heart.”
