Seamlessly transfer your eSIM to a new device with our step-by-step guide. Learn about eSIM benefits, compatibility, and activation for Airtel, Jio, and Vi

Transferring your eSIM to a new device is easier than you think. Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIMs are digital, allow multiple numbers on a single device, and can be activated without visiting a store. Whether you prefer automatic transfer or using a QR code, this guide walks you through the process step by step so you stay connected seamlessly.
What is an eSIM
An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM integrated directly into a device’s motherboard, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot. This technology allows users to activate a cellular plan without inserting a traditional SIM. In India, Bharti Airtel, Jio, and Vi are the main providers offering eSIM support for both Android and iOS devices.
Check if your device supports eSIM
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Tap About Phone.
- Look for Show EID.
- If an EID number appears, your phone is eSIM-compatible.
Popular eSIM-compatible devices:
- Apple: iPhone 14 and above
- Google: Pixel 4 and later
- Samsung: Galaxy S and Z series
- Other smartphones: Many modern devices
Benefits of eSIM
- Since eSIMs are embedded within the device, they cannot be physically removed, misplaced, or stolen, reducing risks of tampering or unauthorised access.
- eSIMs employ sophisticated authentication processes and strong encryption standards, making them more resistant to cyberattacks and intrusion attempts.
- Each eSIM carries a unique digital identity, making cloning attempts far more difficult and reducing chances of identity theft or fraudulent use.
- Multiple authentication steps and controlled access mechanisms add an extra layer of defence for both device and network.
- Firmware and software patches can be delivered remotely to eSIMs, ensuring devices stay protected against evolving vulnerabilities.
How to activate your eSIM (by carrier):
- Airtel: Send an SMS to 121 that contains your ‘eSIM registered email ID’
- Jio: Send an SMS to 199 that contains your ‘eSIM registered email ID’
- Vi: Send an SMS to 199 with the message ‘GETESIM’
Steps to activate your eSIM using a QR code
- Open the Settings app on your device and locate your IMEI and EID numbers.
- Your network operator will send an SMS containing detailed activation instructions.
- A QR code will be delivered to your registered email. If needed, update or verify your email address through your operator’s official app.
- Simply scan the QR code on your device to complete the eSIM activation.
The QR Code scanning procedure varies by smartphone
- Samsung: Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager > Add Mobile Plan > Add Using QR Code.
- Apple: Go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan.
- Pixel: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network > Download a SIM instead > Next, then scan the QR code from your email.
