How to grow money plant in water at home: Beginner-friendly tips

Money plants are among the easiest indoor plants to grow in water. They need very little maintenance, adapt quickly to indoor spaces, and can begin developing fresh roots within just two weeks under the right conditions. Their lush green vines also brighten homes, balconies, and office corners naturally.

• Choose a healthy stem cutting

Start with a healthy money plant vine. Cut a 4–6 inch stem just below a node (the small bump on the stem where leaves and roots grow).

Ensure the cutting has at least 2–3 healthy leaves attached. Remove the leaves near the lower part of the stem before placing it in water.

• Use a clean water container

Take a clean glass jar, bottle, or transparent container. Clear containers make it easier to monitor root growth.

Fill the container with clean, room-temperature water. Keep the stem nodes submerged in water while ensuring the leaves remain above the waterline to avoid rotting.

• Place it in bright indirect light

Money plants grow best in bright but indirect sunlight. Place the container near a window, balcony, or a well-lit indoor corner.

Avoid harsh direct sunlight for long periods, as excessive heat can damage the leaves and slow root development.

• Change the water regularly

Replace the water every 4–5 days to keep the plant healthy. Fresh water helps prevent bacteria, algae, mosquito larvae, and unpleasant odors from forming. Cleaning the container occasionally also supports healthier root growth.

• Watch new roots grow

With proper care, tiny white roots may begin appearing within 10–14 days. As the roots grow longer and stronger, the money plant can continue thriving in water for months. If preferred, you can later transfer the plant into soil for further growth.
