Google has a layer of security to Android devices with Advanced Protection, a feature introduced with Android 16. Designed to help users stay protected from online threats, the feature can automatically detect and block malicious websites, suspicious calls, phishing attempts and other harmful activities.

What is Advanced Protection?

Advanced Protection acts as a central security control for your Android device.

When enabled, it can:

  • Block known malicious websites and warn about unsafe links.
  • Detect and reduce scam and spam calls.
  • Filter suspicious messages in Google Messages.
  • Help protect against phishing and cyberattacks.
  • Prevent connections to less secure 2G cellular networks.

Steps to enable Advanced Protection on your Android phone

  • Open the Settings app on your Android phone to activate Advanced Protection.
  • Navigate to the Security & Privacy settings.
  • Under the Other settings menu, tap the Advanced Protection button.
  • You can also activate Advanced Protection via the Google settings by selecting the Advanced Protection option under the Personal and device safety menu after tapping the All services button in the Google app.
  • Next, select the Advanced Protection menu and tap the Device protection button.
  • Now, choose Turn on.
  • Your Android phone will now prompt you to restart.

Steps to disable Advanced Protection on your Android phone

Please be aware that your Android device may require a restart to restore certain default settings.

  • Open the Settings app on your Android phone to turn off Advanced Protection.
  • Next, navigate to the Advanced Protection page.
  • Go to the Security & Privacy menu in the Settings app, then select the Advanced Protection option from the Other settings menu.
  • Alternatively, open the Google app, tap the All services button, and then select the Advanced Protection option from the Personal and device safety menu.
  • Next, go to the Advanced Protection section and disable Device protection.
  • You will now need to enter your phone's security PIN or complete biometric authentication.
  • To finish the process, your device may need to restart.
