The scorching heat creates health issues not just in human beings and animals but in birds as well since they lack a proper system in their body to defend against the soaring temperature.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion in poultry chickens
Lying down with stretched legs and wings, rapid breathing, breathing through the mouth, loss of appetite, excessive thirst, weight loss, and decrease in egg size are some common symptoms found in poultry chickens.
With the increase in temperature over 32 degrees, the growth of the chickens will reduce by 5 per cent per each degree. Apart from this, it will cause Marek’s disease, smallpox, eye infections, and coccidiosis in them.
Measures to be taken to save poultry from heat exhaustion
Water: This is the most significant factor in fighting heat strokes. An ample amount of clean cold water should be made available. The water tanks should be covered with moist gunny bags.
Feed: It is better to feed the chickens either in the morning or evening when the temperature is low. Vitamins, especially Vitamin C, and minerals should be included in the diet. Providing electrolytes, Vitamin B Complex and probiotics would also help to increase the food intake and immunity besides reducing stress.
Coop: It should be set up on the East-West side to avoid direct sun rays falling on it. The roof can be made of palm leaves or hay to reduce the temperature inside the coop by 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.
If the farm is bigger then the roof can be made of long-lasting Aluminium which can also resist heat to an extent. The roof, which should be at the correct height, can be painted in white to reduce the heat absorption.
Inside of the coop can be filled with sacks, hay or palm leaves. Also, proper ventilation should be provided.
