Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Near Indira Bridge, Bhat Village, Dist. Gandhinagar, Gujarat - 382 428, has invited applications for admission to its PhD Program in Physics-2025.

IPR is a premier scientific research institute under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, engaged in magnetic confinement fusion research and development of plasma technologies for plasma applications and societal benefits.

IPR undertakes Doctoral research in theory, experiment, and computational Plasma Physics on wide variety of fields such as Dusty plasma, Laser-Plasma interaction, Industrial Plasma, Fusion Plasma, Tokamaks and Radio frequency Discharges and Applications etc.

Eligibility: Applicant should have M.Sc. or should be expecting an M. Sc. in 2025 in one of Physics, Engineering Physics or Applied Physics with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks. Applicant must have studied Physics and Mathematics courses at the under graduate level. Those with BS/B.Sc. (4-years) in Physics with a minimum aggregate of 75% marks can also apply. 

Applicant should have qualified in one of the following national level examinations: (i) GATE in Physics (Paper code PH) valid for 2023/2024/2025 (ii) CSIR–UGC-JRF-NET in December 2024 (January 2025) or June 2024 (August – September 2024) in Physical Sciences (Subject code PHY). 

Age Limit: Applicant should not be more than 26 years as on 1st August 2025 (born on or after 01.08.1999). Age relaxation will be as follows: SC/ST-5 years; OBC-3 years and Persons with disability (PWD) of all categories-10 years. 

Selection: Shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for a personal interview. They will be paid to and fro Sleeper class Rail Fare to appear interview in IPR. The final selection of the candidates shall be based on performance in the interview.

Ph.D. Registration: The selected Junior Research Fellows (JRFs) will be eligible for registration for the Ph.D. programme of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) (deemed to be university) subject to fulfilment of HBNI/UGC norms. The Degree will be awarded by the HBNI.

Short-listed candidates for the Physical-Interview shall be announced on the IPR website by 2nd May 2025. In all cases, relevant information regarding the interviews will be emailed to the shortlisted candidates well in advance. 

Stipend & Facilities: Those selected will receive consolidated stipend of Rs.37,000/- per month for first two years and Rs. 42,000/- per month for the next three years. They are also eligible for Book grant of Rs. 60,000/- per year. Medical facility will be provided at a nominal charge. House rent allowance (HRA) as per IPR rules and regulations will be given for those candidates who choose not to stay in IPR hostel. 

Hostel Accommodation: Limited hostel accommodations are available in IPR premises for selected candidates. Women candidates and candidates with PWD shall be given preference for Hostel accommodation. Candidates should mention their respective choice of accommodation in the application form.
