The biggest challenge in medical admissions is often not securing a seat, but navigating the counselling process.

Acknowledging that, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has introduced a series of student-centric reforms for NEET UG 2026 counselling, reducing paperwork, cutting down unnecessary travel and making several key procedures completely online.

The changes are intended to make the admission process more transparent, efficient and convenient for lakhs of candidates participating in counselling this year.

Among the most significant reforms is the removal of mandatory physical reporting for candidates who wish to upgrade their allotted seat in subsequent rounds.

Earlier, candidates opting for an upgrade had to report to the allotted medical college to complete admission formalities before participating in the next round.

Under the revised system, the allotted seat will continue to remain valid in the MCC counselling portal while the candidate participates in later rounds, subject to the applicable counselling rules.

This is expected to save both time and travel expenses for students. Another key change is the introduction of an online resignation facility.

Candidates who wish to surrender their allotted seat, wherever permitted under the counselling rules and within the prescribed timelines, can now complete the process through the MCC counselling portal.

Until now, resigning from a seat generally required physical submission of documents at the allotted institution.

The counselling process has also been made easier for candidates applying under the NRI quota in deemed universities.

They will now be able to upload the required documents online through the counselling portal instead of relying on offline submission.

How students should navigate the new process

  1. Register on the MCC counselling portal and complete choice filling within the notified deadline.
  2. Check the seat allotment result after each counselling round.
  3. If allotted a seat, decide whether to retain it or opt for an upgrade.
  4. Candidates choosing an upgrade do not need to visit the allotted college solely to preserve their admission.
  5. If permitted under the counselling rules, candidates wishing to resign from their allotted seat can do so online through the MCC portal within the stipulated timeline.
  6. NRI candidates applying to deemed universities should upload all required documents directly on the counselling portal for verification.

Alongside these reforms, the MCC has instructed all participating institutions and state counselling authorities to strictly follow the counselling schedule and treat Saturdays, Sundays and gazetted holidays as working days to ensure timely completion of the admission process.
