India’s costliest number plate, HR 88B 8888, has shattered records by selling for a massive ₹1.17 crore in Haryana’s latest e-auction. But who exactly outbid 44 others to claim the “lucky” number — and what makes these repeating digits such a massive obsession?

In a nail-biting auction held on Wednesday, the vehicle registration number HR 88B 8888 fetched an astonishing ₹1.17 crore, making it the costliest license plate India has ever seen. The auction was held online under the state’s VIP registration scheme.
The bidding began at a humble base price of ₹50,000, but the unusual appeal of the number — a near-seamless string of “8”s, bolstered by the letter “B” which resembles an “8” in uppercase — triggered a frenzied bidding war. By noon, the bid had already surged past ₹88 lakh.
A total of 45 bidders had vied for the plate on the state’s official auction portal. When the clock struck 5 pm, the hammer came down on the ₹1.17 crore bid, securing a new record for VIP plates in the country.
According to reports, the winning bid was placed by a man from Hisar — Sudhir Kumar — although authorities note that final assignment of the registration will only take place once payment is completed. Sudhir reportedly did not have a vehicle yet, and said he “just liked the number.”
What Made “HR 88B 8888” So Coveted?
What sets this plate apart is more psychological and aesthetic than functional. The heavy repetition of the digit “8” — considered auspicious and a sign of prosperity in many cultures — along with the “B” that blends visually into the sequence, created a sense of exclusivity and charm. The result: wealthy car-owners and number-plate enthusiasts were willing to bid more for the plate than many cars are worth.
Further, the frenzy highlights a growing trend: for some buyers, a fancy or symbolic registration number is as important — sometimes more so — than the car itself. In previous auctions, even modest two-wheelers have received plates that cost several times their market value.
What This Means for the Market
The sale of “HR 88B 8888” at ₹1.17 crore is more than just a headline — it sets a new benchmark for VIP number-plate auctions in India. It underscores growing demand for distinctive, “lucky” license plates among affluent buyers and car-culture enthusiasts.
For regulators, it highlights how a functional identifier is becoming a premium commodity — blurring the line between necessary registration and status symbol. For bidders, it signals that with the right combination of symbols and enough money, even a license plate can be a high-value asset.
