X (formerly Twitter) suffered a significant outage on Thursday, 26 March, leaving thousands of users unable to load timelines, log in, or post content. The disruption began shortly before noon, with complaints rapidly escalating across regions.

According to the outage-tracking service Downdetector, user reports spiked sharply around 12:25 pm IST, with the platform recording as many as 1,700–1,800 reports at its peak and, in separate spikes, more than 30,000 complaints as the disruption widened. In earlier readings, more than 500 users had also logged issues ranging from slow loading to complete service failure.

The service appears to have stabilised by around 1:03 pm IST, with timelines loading normally and posting functions restored. However, no formal explanation has yet been issued by the company led by Elon Musk.

Surge in reports across devices

Users began flagging problems shortly before 12 pm IST. Downdetector’s data showed a steep and sudden rise in outage alerts, indicating that the issue was widespread rather than an isolated glitch affecting select regions or devices.

Reports came from across smartphones, including iPhone and Android, as well as desktop browsers, suggesting a platform-level disruption.

What users experienced

During the outage, many users were met with completely blank feeds, with some unable to view even their own posts. Others found themselves repeatedly logged out or unable to sign into their accounts.

Posting was also affected, with users encountering error messages while attempting to publish content. Several noted that the service behaved inconsistently, with some features intermittently loading while others failed entirely.

No official statement yet

As of Thursday afternoon, X had not commented publicly on the cause of the disruption. It remains unclear whether the outage stemmed from a backend malfunction, infrastructure-level issue, or another technical fault.
