WhatsApp may soon allow messaging without phone numbers via usernames, boosting privacy and security

WhatsApp could be on the verge of a significant change in how users connect. The messaging platform, owned by Meta, is reportedly working on a WhatsApp username feature that may allow users to send messages without needing to know or share a mobile number. This upcoming WhatsApp new update could transform the way people communicate, prioritising privacy and convenience.
Before the feature is officially launched, WhatsApp may allow users to reserve their usernames in advance. This means users could choose a unique identity for themselves without revealing their phone number, a step forward in WhatsApp phone number privacy.
What to expect from WhatsApp username reservation
A report from WABetaInfo suggests that WhatsApp could soon introduce the option for users to reserve their usernames ahead of the official rollout. This means individuals may soon be able to choose a personalised username of their choice, potentially eliminating the need to share their phone number for messaging. The WhatsApp username feature is still in the development phase, but reports indicate it could become available in the near future.
Once the WhatsApp username reservation system goes live, it is expected to provide a more private and streamlined way of communicating. The feature is currently visible in the WhatsApp beta testing programme on the Google Play Store.
According to details shared in the report, users will be able to find a new “Username” option under their profile section once the update is rolled out. Here, they can create a username following certain guidelines — for example, usernames cannot include web addresses but must contain at least one alphabetic character.
Every username on WhatsApp will have to be unique, ensuring that no two users share the same identity. If a username is already in use, the app will alert the user and prompt them to select or modify their choice accordingly.
In addition to usernames, WhatsApp is said to be working on an extra layer of security known as a “username key”. This key could function as a short password or code, which would need to be entered correctly by anyone attempting to start a chat.
This means only those who know the key can initiate contact, preventing unsolicited messages and adding an additional layer of protection for users’ privacy.
