OpenAI’s AI video creation app Sora has quickly become a sensation since its debut a few weeks ago. The app has climbed to the top of the Apple App Store charts in the US and Canada, with users showcasing their creativity through AI-generated clips. Now, OpenAI is preparing to roll out several fresh features that promise to make the experience even more engaging.

Expanded cameos on the way

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Sora chief Bill Peebles shared the platform’s upcoming roadmap, focusing heavily on the cameo feature. Until now, Sora allowed only human cameos from individuals who had granted permission. The new update will expand this capability, enabling users to include their pets, toys, or practically any object they like in AI-generated videos.

“You'll be able to cameo your dog, guinea pig, favorite stuffed toy, and pretty much anything else you want. You can also create cameos of generated characters straight from your sora videos”, Bill said.

The app’s interface is also set for a refresh, featuring a dedicated section that highlights trending cameos across the platform.

Sora to introduce in-app video editing

Another anticipated upgrade is the introduction of in-app editing tools. Peebles revealed that the company is working on adding “basic video editing capabilities”, allowing users to merge multiple clips seamlessly. He added that more advanced editing functions are already in development and will be released in future updates.

“We're also adding basic video editing capabilities to the app, starting with stitching together multiple clips, and we'll add very powerful new features here soon,” Peebles added.

Building communities within Sora

At present, Sora features a global feed showcasing trending AI videos from around the world. However, OpenAI now plans to add a Communities tab, designed to help users connect more closely with their social circles. These upcoming “channels” could be tailored for universities, workplaces, sports clubs, or other interest-based groups.

“Second, we're working on making the social experience much better. We are exploring new ways to use Sora with your friends (versus just a global feed) and broader community. think channels that are specific to your university, company, sports club, etc,” Peebles said.

It remains to be seen whether these new communities will function like similar spaces found on platforms such as X or Threads.

Reduced moderation and Android release ahead

One of the most frequent complaints from Sora users has been over-moderation of AI-generated content. Peebles acknowledged this concern, saying the team is working to “reduce excessive moderation” while still ensuring content safety. This change should offer users more freedom while improving the overall performance of the app.

“The feed has quietly gotten much better recently, and there are more improvements on the way soon. Team is hard at work continuing to reduce excessive moderation of gens (we know it's super annoying). We're also working to increase the overall performance of the app to feel snappier everywhere,” he added.

Peebles also confirmed that OpenAI plans to bring Sora to Android devices soon, though a specific global release date has yet to be announced. In the end, users were encouraged to keep providing feedback.

“Finally, the android version of sora is actually coming soon. Please keep giving us feedback!” he concluded.
