New Delhi: OpenAI has urged a US court to compel tech giant Meta to share evidence of any coordinated plans with Elon Musk and xAI regarding the acquisition of OpenAI.

The request was revealed in a brief filed as part of Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI, according to TechCrunch. OpenAI’s lawyers subpoenaed Meta in June for documents related to its potential role in Musk’s $97 billion bid to acquire the AI startup in February 2025, which OpenAI had rejected.

OpenAI’s legal team claimed that Musk communicated with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about xAI’s bid for OpenAI, including possible financing arrangements or investments. Meta opposed the initial subpoena in July, prompting OpenAI to seek a court order to obtain the evidence. If successful, OpenAI intends to use it in Musk’s other lawsuit against the company.

Amid its legal dispute with Musk, Meta has made significant investments in developing advanced AI models. Court filings from a separate case revealed that in 2023, Meta executives aimed to create an AI model to surpass OpenAI’s GPT-4, but by early 2025, Meta’s models lagged behind industry standards, reportedly frustrating Zuckerberg. Meta subsequently intensified efforts to recruit key OpenAI researchers and successfully attracted several employees.

Separately, OpenAI confirmed plans to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year, highlighting the rapid adoption of its tools in the country. CEO Sam Altman said India “has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader, exceptional tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”

OpenAI will also host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by its inaugural Developer Day later in the year, bringing together the country’s developer, startup, and enterprise communities, shaping the future of AI.
