A bug in Apple's iOS has been discovered that causes iPhones and iPads to crash when a specific sequence of characters is entered. A security researcher on Mastodon identified the issue, demonstrating that typing the sequence “": followed by any other character into Spotlight Search or the App Library triggers an immediate crash of the device.
However, experts have assured users that this issue does not pose any security threat. They emphasize that there is no indication that anyone other than the iPhone owner manually entering these characters could exploit the bug.
The issue affects multiple versions of iOS, including iOS 17 and the latest
On iOS 18 and 18.1. However, unless you intentionally want to crash your phone or reboot your device, the issue won't be a headache for you. Meanwhile, multiple reports indicate that Apple will rectify the issue in future iOS updates.
