WhatsApp has started rolling out a new WhatsApp translation feature that makes it easier for over three billion people to chat without worrying about language differences. The platform’s latest update allows users to translate WhatsApp chats directly within the app, removing the need for third-party tools. All translations happen locally on the device, meaning WhatsApp cannot access or store the translated text.

The update is being released gradually to Android and iPhone users worldwide. To use the feature as soon as it is available, WhatsApp recommends keeping the app updated.

How the WhatsApp translation feature works

Using the new WhatsApp instant translation option is simple. By long-pressing a message and selecting ‘Translate,’ users can view the text in their chosen language. Once a language pack is downloaded, the translation will work for future messages too, streamlining multilingual conversations.

At launch, Android users can translate WhatsApp chats into six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. On iPhone, the feature is available in over 19 languages, offering broader support on Apple devices.

Android also comes with a setting that allows automatic translation for entire chats. When switched on, every incoming message in that thread will be instantly translated — a useful addition for group discussions or professional communication.

Privacy and security

From a privacy standpoint, the WhatsApp translate function processes everything on the user’s device. This aligns with WhatsApp’s commitment to end-to-end encryption, reassuring users that their messages remain confidential and secure without cloud-based storage.

The rollout is gradual, with the company planning to expand language support beyond the initial set of WhatsApp 19 languages. While no timeline has been shared for universal access, updating the app regularly ensures users get the feature quickly.

With this WhatsApp translation feature, the company is looking to break down communication barriers and make global conversations more natural. As more people try the tool, future updates are expected to bring additional languages and improvements.
