Google unveiled GenTabs, an experimental AI feature that transforms open browser tabs into interactive web applications without requiring users to write code. The tool, powered by the company's recently released Gemini 3 AI model, is available through a new application called Disco, which Google describes as a reimagining of web browsing for the modern era.

GenTabs analyses the content of users' open tabs and chat history to generate custom apps suited to specific tasks. According to Google, if someone is researching a trip to Japan, GenTabs can create an interactive application featuring a zoomable map, calendar, and information panels about cherry blossom viewing locations. The tool has also been demonstrated, creating 3D models of the solar system for educational purposes and meal planning applications.

Unlike traditional browsers, Disco replaces the standard search box with a conversational chatbot interface from the start. The application displays two side-by-side windows: one for ongoing dialogue with Google's chatbot and another for the actual browser displaying tabs. According to TechCrunch, GenTabs proactively suggests interactive web apps based on browsing activity and allows users to refine these applications using natural language commands.

"As our online tasks have grown more complex, we've all felt the frustration of juggling dozens of open tabs to research a topic or plan a trip," Google stated in its announcement. The company emphasised that every generative element links back to original sources.
