Google has launched its AI Plus subscription plan in India, offering access to its advanced Gemini tools and cloud storage at Rs 399 per month, with a promotional rate of Rs 199 for the first six months. The move, announced on December 9, positions the tech giant to compete directly with OpenAI's similarly priced ChatGPT Go plan in one of the world's fastest-growing AI markets.

Targeting India's Booming AI Market

The AI Plus plan provides subscribers with enhanced access to Gemini 3 Pro, described by Google as its most intelligent model yet, along with Nano Banana Pro for image generation and editing. Users also gain access to video generation tools, creative applications like Flow, and Gemini integration directly within Gmail and Google Docs.

The subscription includes 200 GB of storage shared across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail, plus the ability to share benefits with up to five family members. According to Google's official blog, the plan also offers expanded access to NotebookLM for deeper research and analysis.

India represents a critical market for Google, where Gemini has already captured substantial ground. The country accounted for 52% of Gemini's download market share in Q3 2024, far exceeding its 11% share in the United States. Between January and August 2025, Gemini averaged 1.9 million monthly downloads in India, about 55% higher than in the U.S.

Direct Competition With ChatGPT

The Rs 399 price point matches OpenAI's ChatGPT Go plan, which launched exclusively in India in August 2025. Both companies are targeting price-sensitive markets where the standard $20 monthly subscriptions for premium AI services can prove prohibitive.

Google first introduced the AI Plus tier in Indonesia in September 2025 before expanding to more than 40 countries. The plan sits between the company's free offerings and its more expensive AI Pro plan at Rs 1,950 per month and AI Ultra plan at Rs 24,500 per month.

The launch comes as Alphabet reported strong third-quarter 2025 results, with revenues of $102.3 billion, up 16% year-over-year. CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the Gemini App now has over 650 million monthly active users globally.

Google emphasised that the new tier aims to make AI tools "more accessible to a wider demographic" in India, where users are already actively engaging with tools ranging from the Gemini app to NotebookLM.
