Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has broadened its service portfolio with the launch of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), 4G, and eSIM support. The new VoWiFi feature allows users to place voice and video calls over a Wi-Fi connection when cellular coverage is weak or unable to connect.

After a long wait, the state-run telecom operator is finally aligning its offerings with modern network services already available with private players. Alongside this, BSNL has also recently rolled out 4G connectivity in Mumbai and extended eSIM availability nationwide.

VoWiFi service rollout

The VoWiFi service was officially soft-launched by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Secretary Neeraj Mittal during BSNL’s silver jubilee celebrations on October 2. Initially targeting circles in the western and southern regions, the service automatically shifts users with compatible devices to a Wi-Fi signal when mobile networks are inaccessible, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.

4G and eSIM expansion

BSNL’s 4G services are now live in Mumbai and Delhi, enhancing its high-speed network presence in major cities. At the same time, the operator has introduced eSIM support nationwide. This digital SIM service, powered by Tata Communications’ Move platform, is available across all circles, including Tamil Nadu, making device activation more seamless for customers.

Partnerships and new initiatives

Earlier this month, BSNL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Posts (DoP) to distribute its SIM cards bundled with call minutes through 1.65 lakh post offices across India, expanding its reach even in rural regions. Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated BSNL’s first indigenous 4G network in Jharsuguda, Odisha, highlighting the company’s commitment to developing self-reliant telecom infrastructure.

With the addition of VoWiFi, 4G, and eSIM services, BSNL is reinforcing its strategy to modernise its network, improve accessibility, and strengthen customer experience across the country, especially in remote areas.
