New Delhi: Apple has rolled out a new Digital ID feature that lets users create and present a digital version of their identification card in Apple Wallet, using details from their US passport. The company announced that the feature, currently in beta, will first be accepted at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in more than 250 airports across the United States for domestic flights.

What is Apple’s new digital ID?

According to an Apple press release, the Digital ID gives users a simple and secure way to carry their identification on their iPhone or Apple Watch. It is especially useful for individuals who do not have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s licence or state-issued ID. However, Apple clarified that the Digital ID does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings.

Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, Jennifer Bailey, said, “With the launch of Digital ID, we're excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch.” She added that users have welcomed the option to add driver’s licences and state IDs since 2022, and that the Digital ID feature now allows even more people to enjoy that convenience.

How can users create their digital ID?

To set up a Digital ID, users can open the Wallet app, tap the “Add” button, and select “Driver’s Licence or ID Cards.” From there, they choose “Digital ID” and follow a verification process. This includes scanning the photo page of their passport and reading the chip embedded inside it to verify authenticity.

Users must also take a selfie and complete a few facial movements to confirm their identity. Once verified, the Digital ID will appear directly in Apple Wallet.

How does digital ID work?

When presenting their Digital ID, users can double-click the side or Home button, choose Digital ID, and hold their device near an identity reader. They can then review the requested information and authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID before sharing any details.

Apple highlighted that the Digital ID uses advanced security measures built into iPhone and Apple Watch to prevent theft or tampering. All data is encrypted and stored only on the user’s device. The company stated that it cannot see when or where a Digital ID is used or what information is shared.

Users must approve each request through biometric authentication, ensuring that control always remains in their hands.

Where will digital ID be accepted next?

Apple said more use cases will soon follow, enabling people to use their Digital ID for identity and age verification both in person and online at selected businesses and organisations.

Currently, users in 12 US states and Puerto Rico can already add driver’s licences or state IDs to Apple Wallet. The feature has recently expanded to Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia.

Internationally, Japan has also introduced support for the My Number Card on iPhone, allowing similar digital identification capabilities.
