Apple has hired Amar Subramanya, a former Google and Microsoft AI leader, as its new vice president of artificial intelligence

Apple Inc has taken a major step to bolster its artificial intelligence efforts by appointing Amar Subramanya, a Bengaluru-educated AI expert and former Google and Microsoft executive, as its new vice president of AI. Subramanya succeeds John Giannandrea, who is retiring but will continue advising until spring 2026.
Subramanya’s appointment is part of Apple’s high-stakes effort to catch up with rivals like Google and Microsoft, which have surged ahead in generative AI development. At Apple, he will oversee foundation models, machine learning research, and AI safety teams, with a focus on revitalising Siri and the Apple Intelligence suite, which has faced criticism for inaccurate outputs and delayed rollouts.

Subramanya brings over 16 years of experience at Google, where he led engineering for Gemini, a multimodal AI assistant with up to 1.2 trillion parameters. He briefly joined Microsoft in July 2025 as corporate vice president of AI, contributing to foundation models powering Copilot in Office and Azure, before moving to Apple.
His academic and professional credentials are extensive: a BE from Bangalore University and a PhD from the University of Washington, where he specialised in semi-supervised learning and graphical models. He has published influential work in NLP, speech recognition, and audio-visual systems, and co-authored the book Graph-Based Semi-Supervised Learning.
Apple aims to leverage Subramanya’s expertise to accelerate a 1-trillion-parameter in-house model and improve Siri’s contextual awareness and app integration. The company is also exploring a $1 billion licensing deal with Google’s Gemini AI, highlighting the intense talent and technology competition in Silicon Valley.
According to sources, Subramanya’s role is critical for Apple’s AI ambitions, which have struggled with product delivery despite strong research foundations under Giannandrea. Reporting to software SVP Craig Federighi, Subramanya will lead Apple’s efforts to regain competitiveness in AI and redefine the company’s voice assistant capabilities.
