Google’s next major Android update is shaping up with a rather sweet twist—internally, it has been given the codename ‘Cinnamon Bun’. Although Google stopped using dessert names in its public branding after Android 10, the company continues the tradition behind the scenes. The latest revelation comes from a report by Android Authority, which claims Android 17 will carry the pastry-inspired moniker during development.

Android Authority reported that a trusted source within Google shared evidence showing the use of CinnamonBun as the codename for API level 37.0—the platform corresponding to Android 17.

The pastry, also known as a cinnamon roll or swirl, is a baked delicacy made with sweet dough, cinnamon-sugar filling, and icing. It remains especially popular across northern Europe and North America.

Android 17 release date timeline

Google has been adjusting its release cycle in recent years. With Android 15, the rollout was separated from the Pixel 9 series, giving the update its own schedule. Android 16 further refined this approach by introducing a major SDK release in the second quarter and a smaller SDK update later in the fourth quarter.

If the company maintains this system, the Android 17 release date for its major SDK is expected around Q2 2026, with a minor SDK version following in Q4 2026.

However, early builds should arrive much sooner. With Android 16, the first Developer Preview was rolled out in November 2024. Following that pattern, the initial Android 17 Developer Preview is reportedly likely to appear in November 2025.

As for the stable release, Google launched Android 16 on June 10, 2025. Based on that timeline, the Android 17 release date for its stable version is expected around June 2026, provided the company sticks to its current yearly cycle.
