Melbourne: Elina Svitolina delivered a stunning upset on Tuesday, dismantling third seed Coco Gauff to surge into the Australian Open semifinals and move a step closer to a first Grand Slam title.

The 12th-seeded Ukrainian was ruthless under the closed roof of Rod Laver Arena, racing to a 6-1, 6-2 victory in just 59 minutes as Gauff’s serve faltered badly. Dropping only three games, Svitolina reached her fourth career Grand Slam semifinal—and her first at the Australian Open—while extending her winning streak to 10 matches.

The performance continues a remarkable return to form for Svitolina, who ended her 2025 season early last September to “heal and recharge.” Since coming back, she has hit the ground running, lifting her 19th career title in Auckland to open the year and now riding the third-longest tour-level winning streak of her career. She will face Aryna Sabalenka next for a place in the final.

Earlier on Tuesday, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka defeated American Iva Jovic with the scores standing at 6-3, 6-0.

This year's Australian Open also saw two-time champion Naomi Osaka pull out of the tournament on Saturday just before her third-round clash with local qualifier Maddison Inglis.
