Paul now faces rising star Learner Tien, while the other semifinal features Flavio Cobolli against Sebastian Korda.

Florida: Tommy Paul dismantled top-seeded Taylor Fritz on Friday night, ousting the defending champion in straight sets to reach the semifinals of the Delray Beach Open.
In a clash between the two highest-ranked Americans in the draw, the fifth-seeded Paul showcased superior movement and baseline consistency to secure a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The win marks a significant turning point for Paul in their head-to-head rivalry, which now stands levelled at 3-3 after Fritz had led the series entering the week.
Paul’s Defensive Masterclass
The match was characterised by Paul’s ability to neutralise Fritz’s powerful first serve. Paul secured the decisive break in the seventh game of the opening set, pulling Fritz into extended rallies that appeared to expose the top seed's lingering physical issues. While Fritz struggled to find his rhythm, Paul was clinical on his own delivery, winning 82% of his first-serve points and never facing a break point in the second set.
Paul’s victory guarantees a fresh champion for the 2026 edition of the tournament. He is now set to face the rising 19-year-old Learner Tien in the semifinals. Tien, the fourth seed, reached the final four after an exhausting three-set upset over eighth-seeded Frances Tiafoe.
The Road Ahead
On the other side of the bracket, third-seeded Flavio Cobolli will take on Sebastian Korda, who advanced after an impressive straight-sets win over second-seeded Casper Ruud. The results ensure that three of the four semifinalists are American, maintaining the tournament's tradition of strong domestic performances.
For Fritz, currently world No. 8, the loss ends a gruelling February stretch that included a run to the final in Dallas last week. Despite the early exit, Fritz remains the top-ranked American, but questions persist regarding his readiness for the upcoming "Sunshine Double" in Indian Wells and Miami.
Fritz told reporters after the match:
"My body isn't at 100 per cent, but that's no excuse. Tommy played a great match and didn't offer any free points. I need to get healthy before California."
