Citroën officially announced its return to world championship racing by joining the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship starting with the 2025/26 season, marking a new chapter for the storied French automaker. This entry replaces fellow Stellantis brand Maserati, which will exit the all-electric series after three challenging seasons.

With a rich motorsport heritage largely in rallying, including nine consecutive World Rally Championship titles with Sebastien Loeb, and success in touring car championships, Citroën now embarks on its first open-wheel racing campaign and its inaugural foray into fully electric motorsport. This marks the first time the brand has competed as a manufacturer in world championship racing since its 2019 departure from the WRC.

The Citroën Formula E team will be managed by MSG Racing, the same outfit that ran Maserati’s Formula E entry. They are expected to utilise the same powertrain technology as fellow Stellantis brand DS Automobiles, which has been a formidable competitor in Formula E.

The driver lineup is anticipated to include two-time Formula E champion Jean-Éric Vergne and Nick Cassidy, both experienced electric racing drivers with ties to Stellantis brands. The new Citroën car is slated for its debut during pre-season testing in Valencia in October 2025.

Citroën describes its Formula E campaign as “an electric, innovative and passionate adventure” that aligns with its vision of future mobility. The 2025/26 race calendar features city-centre circuits appealing to a young and connected audience, providing Citroën a platform to showcase its technological aspirations on a global stage.

This move solidifies Stellantis’ presence in Formula E with multiple brands, reinforcing its commitment to electric racing and sustainable motorsport innovation. Citroën’s entry heralds a return of an iconic motorsport name to the forefront of electric racing competition.
