Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday announced a cash incentive of ₹30 lakh each for Chennai-based squash players Joshna Chinappa and Shameena Riyaz following their bronze medal victory in the women’s team event at the 20th Asian Games in Japan.
The pair formed part of the four-member Indian women's squash contingent alongside Anahat Singh and Tanvi Khanna that secured a podium finish in the continental event.
Congratulating the squad on their performance, Chief Minister Vijay noted that the achievement significantly enhanced Tamil Nadu's standing on the international sports stage.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Indian team, which has achieved a historic feat by winning a bronze medal in the women's squash team event at the 20th Asian Games in Japan, and to Tamil Nadu squash players Joshna Chinappa and Shameena Riyaz, who are part of that team," Vijay stated in a post on X.
Announcing the cash prize, the Chief Minister confirmed that the state government would present ₹30 lakh to each of the two local athletes in line with Tamil Nadu's policy of honoring medal winners at national and international competitions.
He attributed their achievement to perseverance, skill, and self-belief, describing them as inspirations for aspiring athletes across the state.
"Their success will serve as an excellent inspiration for young men and women striving to achieve greatness. My best wishes for them to secure many more such laurels in the future and elevate the pride of Tamil Nadu and India on the global stage," he added.
Both Joshna Chinappa and Shameena Riyaz hail from Chennai and were formally recognised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu for their medal-winning contribution to Team India.
