Despite the turbulent backdrop, Iran’s players focused on football and were twice forced to recover from deficits against the tournament’s lowest-ranked side. New Zealand took an early lead in the seventh minute when Elijah Just finished a flowing counter-attack involving Chris Wood and Sarpreet Singh.
Iran responded strongly, with Mehdi Taremi striking the post midway through the first half, before Ramin Rezaeian levelled in the 32nd minute after reacting quickest to a rebound inside the box.
New Zealand regained the advantage early in the second half through Just’s second goal, finishing a slick one-two with Wood after a turnover in midfield. However, Iran struck back again nine minutes later as Mohammad Mohebi powered in a header from Rezaeian’s cross.
The match remained open in the closing stages, with Iran pushing for a winner but unable to convert chances, as New Zealand held firm defensively.
Off the pitch, the game was marked by protests both inside and outside the stadium, with demonstrators expressing opposition to Iran’s government. The Iranian national anthem drew a mixed response from sections of the crowd, while political symbols were visible despite FIFA regulations.
Iran’s build-up to the tournament had been disrupted by visa issues and last-minute logistical changes, including a relocation of their training camp to Mexico.
The result leaves Iran with mixed fortunes in Group G, where Egypt and Belgium also shared a draw on the opening matchday, while New Zealand continue to search for their first World Cup victory.
