While Yamal’s late substitution injected energy, it wasn't enough to secure a win. Spain’s strategy prioritizes long-term fitness over early tournament results, betting on their stars’ health for the grueling group stages ahead.

Atlanta: Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign began with a significant tactical setback on Monday, as the reigning European champions were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by tournament debutants Cape Verde at the Atlanta Stadium. Amid a flat and inefficient offensive display from La Roja, the primary talking point centred on why teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was withheld from the starting line-up, only entering the fray late in the second half.
The Hamstring Management Plan
The decision to bench the 18-year-old Barcelona superstar was purely a cautionary measure aimed at easing him back to full match fitness. Yamal had arrived at the tournament following a nearly two-month layoff due to a hamstring injury suffered during the final stages of the domestic club season.
While football enthusiasts on social media questioned the omission, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente had been explicit about managing the youngster's workload. In his pre-match press conference, De la Fuente stated that although Yamal was in "ideal condition" to play, the coaching staff were strictly following the guidance of medical specialists.

A Constrained Offensive Performance
The conservative approach to Spain's primary attacking asset ultimately left the side lacking lateral creativity. Spain dominated the share of possession but struggled to dismantle Cape Verde's disciplined defensive low-block. Starters Ferran Torres and Mikel Oyarzabal turned in highly disappointing performances, failing to find sufficient space against the African nation’s backline or beat their inspired 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha.
Desperate to inject an attacking spark, De la Fuente finally introduced Yamal in the 71st minute as a replacement for Gavi. The Barcelona winger immediately transformed the tempo, injecting much-needed unpredictability, and even delivered a precise late cross that Oyarzabal headed wide in stoppage time. However, with Cape Verde remaining completely composed, Yamal could not single-handedly shatter the deadlock.

Guarding Against a Gruelling Campaign
Yamal was not the only Spanish jewel wrapped in cotton wool; fellow winger Nico Williams was also restricted to a late cameo, entering the pitch in the 87th minute following his own injury-disrupted season with Athletic Bilbao.
With a gruelling schedule ahead in Group H, Spain's management chose to prioritise the long-term physical preservation of their teenage prodigy, even if it meant sacrificing immediate success against the world's 67th-ranked nation.
