This historic result secures Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup point and leaves Group H wide open.

Atlanta: World Cup debutants Cape Verde pulled off one of the greatest shocks in modern footballing history on Monday, holding European champions Spain to a dramatic 0-0 draw in their opening Group H fixture. Playing at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia, the African nation defied a massive chasm in prestige and rankings to frustrate the tournament favourites and secure a historic first-ever point on the global stage.
Spain entered the tournament ranked second in the FIFA world rankings and on a formidable ten-match unbeaten streak. In stark contrast, Cape Verde sat 69th in the world and qualified as the third smallest country by population in the expanded 48-team tournament.
The 40-Year-Old Wall Frustrates La Roja
The narrative of the match belonged entirely to Cape Verde’s defensive organisation and their legendary 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha. The veteran shot-stopper single-handedly acted as a wall that the Spanish forwards failed to breach.
Spain completely dominated possession, pinning Cape Verde deep inside their own half with a relentless high press. However, head coach Luis de la Fuente’s men lacked efficiency in the final third:
- First Half: Ferran Torres missed two clear opportunities, with one of his efforts striking the post.
- Stoppage Time: Right before the interval, Aymeric Laporte met a corner from Pedri with a powerful low header, only for Vozinha to pull off a spectacular diving save at the bottom left corner.
Late Drama and Inefficient Offence
As the frustration mounted, local fans inside the stadium began booing the lack of verticality in Spain's play. In the 71st minute, De la Fuente introduced Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal and Mikel Merino in an attempt to salvage the victory. While Yamal's arrival revitalised the attack, forcing a sharp save from a Marcos Llorente shot, Cape Verde’s deep double-defensive block refused to splinter.
Cape Verde actually threatened a late winner on the counter-attack when defender Diney Borges saw his 91st-minute header saved by Unai Simón. Minutes later, a desperate late challenge by Pedri on Nuno da Costa resulted in a yellow card as Spain scrambled to preserve their clean sheet.
The point of criticism was De la Fuente’s tactical approach, stating that the manager waited too long to utilise his primary game-changers from the bench. Ultimately, the tactical gamble failed, and Cape Verde’s heroic rearguard action was rewarded with a clean sheet, completely throwing Group H wide open.
