Budapest: Cristiano Ronaldo continues to etch his name into football history, becoming the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup qualifiers after netting twice in Portugal’s 2–2 draw against Hungary on Tuesday.

At 40 years old, the Portugal captain scored his 40th and 41st World Cup qualifying goals, surpassing former Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz, who previously shared the record with him. Ronaldo's first came in the 22nd minute with a close-range finish, followed by a second in first-half stoppage time.

The goals brought his tally to 41 in just 50 World Cup qualifiers, underlining his consistency on the international stage. He now has an unprecedented 143 goals in men’s international football, further extending his own world record.

Despite Ronaldo’s brace, Portugal were denied early qualification for the 2026 World Cup. After he was substituted in the 78th minute with his side leading 2–1, Hungary struck a dramatic equaliser in added time through captain Dominik Szoboszlai.

The result keeps Portugal at the top of Group F, holding a five-point lead over second-placed Hungary, with two group-stage matches remaining.

Ronaldo currently plays his club football for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.
