What started as a routine goal celebration quickly turned into one of the strangest moments of Coritiba’s match against Chapecoense.

Coritiba defender Jacy Maranhão thought he had scored and raced towards the supporters at Couto Pereira. He jumped over the advertising boards, apparently looking to join the celebrations, but suddenly disappeared from view.

Jacy had fallen into an opening leading towards the players’ tunnel.

The unexpected fall left those inside the stadium stunned. The defender injured his ankle in the incident and was eventually forced to leave the game, turning a moment of joy into an injury scare.

But that was not the end of it.

The goal Jacy celebrated did not even count.

While Jacy was dealing with the consequences of his unusual celebration, VAR delivered another twist.

The goal was reviewed and eventually ruled out for offside.

Videos of the incident quickly drew attention online, with viewers reacting to the bizarre sequence with a mixture of shock and amusement.

Coritiba, however, did not let the strange episode derail their night. The Brazilian side went on to beat Chapecoense 2-1, with Jacy’s teammates providing the goals that secured the victory.

Not the first bizarre celebration at Couto Pereira

There was an unexpected sense of déjà vu to Jacy’s mishap.

In 2014, former Coritiba striker Joel found himself in a remarkably similar situation at the same stadium. After scoring against Sao Paulo, Joel jumped over the advertising boards to celebrate and disappeared into a hole.

The opening concealed a staircase leading towards the dressing rooms underneath the pitch.
