A fiery performance from Australian pacers, particularly Josh Hazlewood, helped the hosts restrict India to a paltry total of 150 in the first innings of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth's Optus Stadium on Friday.
However, Australia was soon five down in reply to India's 150, as KL Rahul completed a superb catch in the slip cordon to send Mitch Marsh packing. Unfortunately for India, the same could not be said for Virat Kohli, who missed a golden opportunity in the initial overs to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne. Despite this, Kohli redeemed himself later by taking a crucial catch to dismiss Usman Khawaja.
Netizens, however, were furious with Kohli’s dropped catch. A video of the incident was later posted on social media. One user on X wrote, "Come on Virat! That was a sitter!" while another added, "Extraordinary drop. Feeling sad for Bumrah."
Despite the criticism, many users came to Kohli's defense. "Even Jonty Rhodes could have missed that. Can't blame the king here. That looked really tough one to take," one user commented, while another said, "Things you need to do to prove you're a human."
Meanwhile, Team India equalled their lowest first-innings total in Australia following a shambolic performance with the bat during the first two sessions of the match at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
Big names like KL Rahul (26), Virat Kohli (5), and Rishabh Pant (37) failed to make big scores. Youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal (0), Dhruv Jurel (11), Washington Sundar (4), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) also struggled.
Australia bundled India out for 150 runs in just 49.4 overs.
Josh Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers, claiming figures of 4/29, while skipper Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and Mitchell Starc each took two wickets.
This is India’s lowest first-innings total against Australia, tying the 150 scored in Sydney in 2000. Sachin Tendulkar top-scored in that innings with 45 runs, and India lost the match by an innings and 141 runs.
