Once celebrated for his explosive talent and fearless batting, Vinod Kambli is now fighting a far more personal and painful battle, one against his own mind.

At 54, the former Indian cricketer’s health has taken a worrying turn. While he has shown small signs of physical recovery, the bigger concern lies deeper. His memory is fading, his neurological condition remains fragile, and doctors have issued a chilling warning: the next stage could be a brain stroke.

Amid this emotional struggle, one name has quietly stepped in: Sachin Tendulkar. More than just a cricketing legend, Tendulkar has stood by his childhood friend during this difficult phase.

He is now part of a WhatsApp group formed by Kambli’s close circle, where friends and well-wishers are contributing financially and emotionally, away from the spotlight.

The initiative, led by Kambli’s longtime friend Marcus Couto, reflects a silent but powerful show of solidarity. “Without taking names, they contribute a lot,” Couto revealed, underlining how the cricket fraternity continues to rally behind the former star.

However, the reality of Kambli’s condition is heartbreaking. “He can’t remember much,” Couto said. “Sometimes things click, but otherwise, it becomes very difficult.”

Even more concerning is the risk ahead. Doctors have warned that a brain stroke remains a serious possibility. While Kambli has given up alcohol, troubling habits persist. In vulnerable moments, he reportedly asks strangers for cigarettes, unaware of the damage it could cause.

“The damage is no longer to his heart or liver… it’s his brain,” Couto said bluntly. And yet, there are flickers of hope.

Kambli has begun walking more comfortably. He recently even appeared in an advertisement shoot, a small but significant sign that he is trying to reclaim parts of his life. Behind the scenes, however, the battle continues.

Years of health complications, including a severe infection and a brain clot that cannot be surgically removed, have left him in a delicate state. Daily routines, even something as simple as remembering medication, remain a challenge.

Through it all, the support hasn’t faded. From Kapil Dev to Sunil Gavaskar, several cricketing greats have stepped forward in the past. Now, with Tendulkar joining the effort, the message is clear, Kambli is not alone.

But as the days pass, one question lingers heavily: Will the man who once lit up cricket fields be able to overcome the toughest innings of his life? For now, his fight continues, quietly, painfully, but not without hope.
