Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar has made a heartwarming promise ahead of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 final—to sing alongside Jemimah Rodrigues if India lifts the trophy on November 2 at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

After Jemimah’s breathtaking match-winning knock against Australia in the semifinals, Gavaskar, in an interview with Sports Today, revealed that he’d love to reprise a musical moment the two once shared years ago.

“If India wins the World Cup, she and I—if she’s okay with it—will sing a song together. She’ll have her guitar, and I’ll sing along,” Gavaskar said with a smile.

“We actually did that once at one of the BCCI awards a few years back. There was a band playing, and we just joined in. She played the guitar, and I sang with my whatever voice I have. If India wins, I’d love to do it again—if she’s happy to do that with an old man!”

Jemimah’s fairytale comeback

The promise comes after Jemimah produced one of the greatest innings in women’s ODI history. The Mumbai batter, who had endured a difficult start to the tournament—scoring just 65 runs in four innings, including two ducks—was even dropped for the clash against England.

However, in the semifinal against defending champions Australia, Jemimah roared back with a majestic 127 not out off 134 balls, guiding India to chase down a mammoth 338-run target—the highest successful chase in women’s ODI history, and across all ODI World Cup knockouts, men’s or women’s.

Her knock, laced with 14 fours, not only propelled India into their first-ever home World Cup final but also reignited the belief that Harmanpreet Kaur’s side could finally bring the elusive title home.

As fans gear up for the blockbuster finale against South Africa, Gavaskar’s musical challenge has added a touch of nostalgia and joy to India’s campaign—linking cricket’s glorious past with its exciting present.

Whether India lift the trophy or not, the thought of Jemimah strumming her guitar while “Sunny G” croons beside her has already struck a sweet chord with fans across generations.
