MS Dhoni turns 44: A legacy built on trophies, calm leadership, and unmatched consistency

MS Dhoni, known as 'Thala', turned 44 on Monday, leaving behind a legacy few can rival. Widely revered for his composure under pressure and razor-sharp cricketing mind, the ICC Hall of Famer has earned global respect as a player, captain, and icon.
Since debuting for India in 2004, Dhoni rose to become a beloved figure in Indian cricket and a symbol of pride for Ranchi. His impact spans both international and franchise cricket.
A revolutionary wicketkeeper-batter
Accumulating 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals, and 538 matches, Dhoni is one of world cricket’s greatest. He redefined the role of a wicketkeeper, joining Australia’s Adam Gilchrist in showing that keepers could be consistent match-winners with the bat.
Often part of a strong middle order with Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, Dhoni became known for his big hitting and the now-iconic helicopter shot.
Dominance in ODIs
ODIs were Dhoni’s strongest format. In 350 matches, he scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57, including 10 centuries and 73 fifties. His highest score of 183* remains legendary. He is India’s sixth-highest scorer in ODIs.
Leading India in 200 ODIs, he won 110 matches with a win percentage of 55. Under his captaincy, India lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.
A winning T20I captain
In T20Is, Dhoni scored 1,617 runs in 98 matches at an average of 37.60 and a strike rate of 126.13. He led India to victory in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. As captain, he won 41 out of 72 matches, giving him a win rate of 56.94%.
Test success and milestones
Dhoni featured in 90 Tests, scoring 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09, including six centuries and 33 fifties. As Test captain, he won 27 of 60 matches and led India to the top of the ICC Test rankings. He also became the only Indian skipper to whitewash Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series of 2010–11 and 2012–13.
IPL giant and franchise favourite
In franchise cricket, Dhoni has 5,439 runs in 278 IPL matches, with 24 fifties and a strike rate over 137. He has won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles with Chennai Super Kings, where he is fondly called 'Thala'.
He remains central to CSK’s popularity. Fans celebrate even the sight of him preparing to bat, chanting his name in stadiums across the country.
From Ranchi to global icon
When Dhoni entered the Indian side in 2004 as a 23-year-old, few could foresee the heights he would reach. His quick reflexes, massive sixes, and signature helicopter shot remain etched in cricket fans’ memories. For generations to come, 'Mahi' will continue to be a symbol of Indian cricketing excellence.
