Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has announced he will retire from first-class cricket at the end of this season, ending a 16-year Sheffield Shield career with Western Australia while keeping the door ajar for a potential Test recall.

The 34-year-old informed his Western Australia teammates of his decision following their Sheffield Shield match against Victoria on Sunday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. A statement from the Western Australian Cricket Association confirmed Monday that "the Australian white-ball captain remains open to the prospect of playing Test cricket".

Struggling Form in Shield Return

Marsh's rare Shield appearance at the MCG proved difficult, as he managed scores of just nine and four in what is likely his final first-class match for the state. The performance came after he had been briefly considered by selectors as a potential option for the ongoing Ashes series, particularly following Australia's opening issues.

"It has been an honour to play Sheffield Shield cricket for WA," Marsh said in a statement. "Right now, I am deeply committed to the group and the [Perth] Scorchers. Playing for WA has been a huge part of my life, and I plan to give back in any way possible long into the future."

Western Australia head coach Adam Voges praised Marsh's contribution to the state side. "Mitch embodies everything about what it means to be a Sheffield Shield player for Western Australia," Voges said. "From playing alongside him to coaching him in more recent times, he's given his all for his state."

Test Future Uncertain

Marsh has played 46 Tests for Australia since his 2014 debut, scoring 2,083 runs at an average of 28.53 with three centuries and taking 51 wickets. He last appeared in a Test during the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the MCG, where he was subsequently dropped for Beau Webster.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald indicated in October that the team would be "comfortable picking someone, and if you want to put a name to it, Mitch Marsh, out of white-ball cricket if we felt like that was going to benefit the Test team". However, with Travis Head's success as a makeshift opener in the Ashes and Marsh's upcoming commitments as T20 captain through the World Cup in February and March, his Test prospects appear slim.

Marsh finishes his Sheffield Shield career with 2,744 runs and 82 wickets across 55 matches for Western Australia. In 122 first-class matches overall, he compiled 6,415 runs, including 13 centuries and 171 wickets.
