New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) concluded a season marked by 'what ifs' in emphatic style, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 110 runs thanks to a power-packed batting display led by Heinrich Klaasen’s blistering century. Klaasen scored an unbeaten 105 off just 39 balls, while Travis Head contributed 76 off 40 as SRH posted an imposing 278 for 3 at the half-filled Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday.

Dominant batting performance sets the tone

The innings echoed SRH’s explosive start to the IPL season when they scored 286 against Rajasthan Royals. On this occasion, Klaasen and Head forged a formidable partnership that set an unassailable target. Klaasen’s aggressive approach saw him reach his half-century in just 18 balls after coming in at the fall of opener Abhishek Sharma (32 off 16 balls). He continued to dominate, striking seven fours and nine sixes, many soaring into the second tier of the stands.

Head and Sharma laid the foundation with a 79-run opening stand in the first six overs, with both players confidently attacking the KKR pace attack by driving and pulling with ease on a featherbed Kotla pitch. The wicket allowed batters to comfortably step out or rock back and hit through the line.

KKR’s bowling struggles on flat track

KKR were never really in contention, managing only 168 for 8 in 18.4 overs in reply. Jaydev Unadkat was effective early on, claiming two wickets for 23 runs in three overs through clever change of pace. Left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey (3/34 in 4 overs) and Sri Lankan pacer Eshan Malinga (3/31 in 3.4 overs) also had notable spells, dismantling the KKR batting line-up.

The KKR bowling unit endured a tough outing on a flat surface where their spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine struggled for control and impact, conceding heavily. Pacers Harshit Rana and Anrich Nortje were severely punished, with Nortje leaking 60 runs in his four overs as he searched for rhythm following limited game time this season. Vaibhav Arora was the only bowler to somewhat contain the damage, finishing with figures of 1/39.

SRH’s season of near misses

Despite their strong finish, SRH and captain Pat Cummins will likely be disappointed with how the campaign unfolded between the first and last games. Their powerful batting displayed menace on flat pitches, but on surfaces requiring adaptability, they faltered. The team secured six victories, endured one washout, and lost at least two winnable matches by small margins.

This inconsistency ultimately cost SRH a place in the playoffs, underscoring how narrow margins can determine success in the IPL.
