Colombo: Cricket's fiercest rivalry resumes Sunday when India and Pakistan meet at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo for a T20 World Cup showdown that almost did not happen. The match, scheduled for 7 PM local time, comes after Pakistan's government reversed its boycott stance following a tumultuous fortnight of diplomatic negotiations involving the ICC, Pakistan Cricket Board, and Bangladesh Cricket Board.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed Saturday that opener Abhishek Sharma will play against Pakistan despite missing the Namibia match due to hospitalisation for a stomach infection. "Abhishek Sharma will play tomorrow," Suryakumar said at a pre-match press conference, adding with a grin: "If Salman Ali Agha wants us to play Abhishek Sharma tomorrow, we shall play him".

Boycott Reversal and Political Drama

The match was thrown into uncertainty on February 1 when Pakistan's government announced its team would not take the field against India at the World Cup, citing solidarity with Bangladesh, which was excluded from the tournament. The ICC responded with warnings of points forfeiture and financial penalties.

After days of marathon negotiations, including a meeting in Lahore between PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, ICC deputy chair Imran Khwaja, and BCB president Aminul Islam, Pakistan reversed course on February 9. The government cited "outcomes achieved in multilateral discussions" and "the request of friendly countries" as reasons for the U-turn.

Weather Threat and Fan Frenzy

A low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal has meteorologists forecasting a 50 to 70 per cent chance of rain during match hours, with thunderstorms predicted around 6 PM local time. The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology has warned of scattered thunderstorms, though some forecasts suggest conditions may improve after 8 PM.

The 35,000-capacity stadium has sold out completely, while demand has sent travel costs soaring. Flight fares from Delhi to Colombo have jumped from approximately Rs 30,000 to as high as Rs 1.45 lakh, while premium hotel rates in Colombo have more than doubled to over Rs 1 lakh per night.

Both Teams Unbeaten

India and Pakistan enter the match tied atop Group A with four points each after winning their opening two matches. India holds the edge on net run rate following a 93-run victory over Namibia. Abhishek, the world's top-ranked T20I batter, has recovered after losing nearly two kilograms during his illness and has resumed training in Colombo.

Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha said Friday his team was "always ready" for India despite the late confirmation, adding he hoped Abhishek would be fit because "we want to play against the best team they have".
